Me loading a rocket

Bird dog on the way to theDMZ.

Officially, the 220th RAC was authorized only white phosphorus 2.75 rockets to use for marking targets. Note, there are four rocket tubes on each wing. Also note, 3 of the rocket heads are protruding farther out of the tubes. These are not willie pete, only 1 of the 4 is wp. These 3 are 17lb. warheads, either HE, or flachet.

I'm in the middle, Lee Peters is on my right, and an arty FO from an arty unit at Dong Ha is on my left, can't remember his name. Sadly, Lee and the FO were killed in a crash shortly after this picture was taken.

The YO 3A was extremely slow. I'm not sure but I think it was slower than the Bird Dog. The aircraft was designed to fly slow and quite. It had a six bladed wooden propeller, a belt driven gear reduction system to turn the prop at a slow speed, and a muffler that ran from the cowl to the tail of the aircraft. It was flown in the DMZ area at night. It could fly over at 500-600 feet, and with normal jungle noises, (insects, wind, etc.) would not be heard.
